It seems that hand held devices, that have internet access, and social media is a match made in heaven. The little gadgets give us access to all the information on the web, almost anywhere. But how exactly will this combination impact your online presence?
The creepy example could be someone spotting the nametag on your luggange, google your name and would actually be able to start a conversation of like “… so you work at..” Most people would not be that creepy, but it could also be you, on your way to a client meeting checking up on their hobbies to spark off interesting smalltalk.
We can ask our selves how medias will have to adapt to the paradigme shift of this new hybrid between a cellphone and a regular computer, that allows user easier access to regular web functionality.
Well the answer seems obvious to me, they will make it easier to do what you usually do on your desktop. This includes looking up people on the net.
For instance i recently replaced my trusted Moleskin notebook for my BNI meetings with an iPad and the webservice Evernote. This first of all allows me to prepare my meeting on my desktop and simply add notes during the meeting, and then when i return to my office use the notes on my desktop, easy! But that would basically also be possible with the regular notebook. But a neat feature is that i during the meeting is able to Google and look up people on LinkedIn to research the people and companies that my team wants contact to, thus giving me a head start.
My point beeing of course that when social media services become mobile in this way it will inevitably change the way we network, the way meetings develop, but also how easy it is too Google your name.
