2010 vs. 2011 in social media

If i could sum up the year 2009 of social media in one word it would be microblogging. My guess is that 2010 would be location based media and content, and my prediction for 2011 would with out a doubt be portable social media.

Lets start of with 2010, since few probably remember what all the hype about microblogging was about since its everywhere today. But what about location based media, did it actually take off at the same speed? Well the answer is yes.

The first two applications that really got peoples attention was Foursquare that really took off in 2010. The other was GoWalla that is also a check-in service but during late 2010 allows users to piggyback off other services such as twitter, facebook and even Foursquare becomming more of a hub. During August 2010 Facebook did as expected and implemented a similar service. So now the race is on, and facebook is taking its time, but as of today we also have this service available in Denmark. But nevermind, since as most social media, they implement seamlessly into each other we still get all the Check-in goodness to share with well everybody. Some times they implement so seamless that ramdom check-ins from i.e. the local fitness center or end up on your Linked-In profile, which in my opinion is a shame..

Check-in and location-based media leaves plenty of possibilities for branding, marketing, socializing and even plain and simple fun.

We will probably be seeing more of this during 2011. So.

Other than check-in services 2010 has also been a race for all  the cellphone companies to develop iPhone spinoffs/killers, (which ever you prefer). The Android platform is gaining momentum, and so is the capabilities of the smartphones. Which brings us right back to my 2011 prediction about portable-based social media.

The combination of more, better, faster, stronger smartphones, tablets and platforms leaves room for a lot of creative developers to invent the next wave of social media – only this time it fits in your pocket.

Happy New Year everybody!

And tell me, did you also earn your “New Year’s 2011″ Badge on foursquare?
